I Have a Dream (New Year’s Edition)

I have a dream — it came last night,
Between the fizz and firework light,
A New Year’s thought, both bold and bright:
What if we fixed a few small things… right?

In my dream, reason took the floor,
Rubbed sleepy eyes and asked for more.
The Victorian Voice declared, once brave:
“All Aussies equal — let’s behave.”
They packed their bags, no fuss, no fight,
Equality restored by morning light.

The Imams Council took a stand,
“No hate,” they said, “will cross this land.”
“Antisemitism ends today —
Dob in the radicals. Lead the way.”
Peace grew louder, hate grew small,
Turns out courage helps us all.

The Human Rights chief, with steely glare,
Demanded laws be truly fair.
“No special lanes, no special tier —
Equality works when rules are clear.”

Feminists met, then shook the room:
“No mandates — thank you — we presume
Equal treatment suits us fine.”
Progress checked its watch: about time.

Words regained their simple grace:
Non-penis space meant… non-penis space.
Language smiled, relieved, at last,
Its meaning rescued from the past.

Indigenous voices joined the tune:
“One flag’s enough — we’re Aussies too.”
The culture wars ran out of steam,
Confused by unity on screen.

Chris Bowen paused, then told the truth:
“Renewables aren’t cheapest — proof.”
Power bills blinked, unsure but glad,
Reality felt… not so bad.

Immigration took a thoughtful break,
Till homes existed we could make.
Supply met demand, as myths were shelved —
A nation paced, but helped itself.

The Rights Commissioner cleared the air:
“Censoring speech? That’s not fair.”
Free voices rose, polite but loud,
Democracy felt rather proud.

Hate speech laws — already there —
Were used, enforced, applied with care.
No rewrites, no performative show,
Just doing what we already know.

And Albanese, at long last moved,
Did what avoidance never proved:
A Royal Commission, clear and true,
On hate that led to Bondi’s blue.

I woke up smiling — not because
This dream ignored our human flaws,
But because none of it seemed mad…
Just decent. Brave. And quietly glad.

So here’s to hope, and here’s to cheer,
To fewer slogans, more sincere.
May courage grow, may truth be seen —
Happy New Year. I have a dream. 🥂
