Radical Islam: The Threat We Refuse To Name

After the Bondi terror attack, the Australian government moved quickly — not to confront the ideology that drove the violence, but to announce gun reforms. It was predictable. And it was evasive.

Once again, Western leaders have avoided the central issue: radical Islamism.

After every Islamist attack, the same ritual plays out. Politicians rush to reassure the public with the mantra “not all Muslims.” Of course that is true. The vast majority of Muslims are peaceful, law-abiding citizens. But endlessly repeating that line has become a substitute for action — a way to shut down discussion rather than confront reality.

The uncomfortable truth is this: a violent minority does not need mass support to wreak havoc. History is littered with examples where small, ideologically driven groups imposed terror while the peaceful majority stood powerless. Good intentions do not stop extremists. Ideology does.

What we are dealing with is not Islam as a faith, but Islamism — a political creed that legitimises violence, glorifies martyrdom, and seeks to impose a theocratic order. It selectively weaponises religious texts and turns belief into justification for murder. Refusing to name this ideology does not protect Muslims. It protects extremists.

Western governments now dissemble out of fear — fear of offence, fear of accusations, fear of electoral consequences. So they hide behind euphemisms, talk about “community cohesion,” and pivot to policies that avoid the cause altogether. Gun reform after a terrorist attack is not courage; it is deflection.

This failure has consequences. If an ideology cannot be named, it cannot be monitored. If it cannot be monitored, it cannot be disrupted. And when it is not disrupted, innocent people die.

No serious adult believes all Muslims are terrorists. That argument was settled years ago. But pretending that repeating “not all Muslims” is a counter-terrorism strategy is dishonest — and dangerous.

A society that cannot speak honestly about the ideology threatening it is a society in decline. Leadership requires the courage to tell the truth, not hide behind platitudes. Until Western governments are willing to name radical Islamism, challenge it openly, and act decisively against those who promote it, the cycle will continue — apologies after attacks, silence before the next. You cannot defeat what you refuse to name.

Mourning Has Turned to Anger — and the Government Owns It

Following the shocking Islamist terrorist attack at Bondi Beach last Sunday, on the first night of Hanukkah, Australia has been united in grief. The shock has been global. The mourning continues.

But so does the anger.

That anger is now squarely directed at the Labor government — at Anthony Albanese, Penny Wong, and Tony Burke. Not because of what they say now, but because of what they failed to do for years.

The Jewish community has laid out the failures clearly:
the refusal to stop repeated hate-filled demonstrations;
the failure to implement the government’s own antisemitism report tabled six months ago;
the tolerance of extremist hate preachers in Sydney and Melbourne;
and the repeated failure of police to halt open antisemitic chanting on Australian streets.

After months of denial, Albanese has finally stirred. He now promises to implement the long-ignored recommendations, and he has unveiled a gun buyback scheme. The first is progress. The second is a distraction.

Because the core problem remains untouched.

The government — Albanese, Wong, and Burke — still refuse to name the ideology driving the surge in antisemitism. The cause is not vague “hate” or abstract “tensions.” It is Islamist extremism — a political creed that seeks a global caliphate under fundamentalist Sharia law. This ideology has been rejected by the vast majority of Muslim-majority nations, yet Western democracies remain paralysed, afraid even to speak its name.

Why? Electoral fear. Labor governs electorates with large Muslim populations and appears unwilling to risk political backlash.

A government that will not name the ideology driving antisemitic violence cannot be trusted to defeat it. You cannot police chants you refuse to condemn, nor stop terror while pretending its roots are unknowable. Until Albanese and his ministers find the courage to speak plainly — not in slogans, but in truths — every promise they make will ring hollow. Leadership begins with honesty. Australia has yet to see it.

The Price of Tolerating the Intolerant

Two years ago, the world was shocked by an unprecedented, barbaric attack on a dance festival in Israel. Hamas terrorists launched a massacre of unfathomable proportions, killing countless civilians, taking hostages, and displaying the true horrors of their ideology. The scale and cruelty of the assault made it one of the most horrific terror attacks in recent history. But what followed in the Western world was just as shocking, if not more so.

Before Israel even had the chance to respond to the attack, there were spontaneous demonstrations in major Western cities, celebrating the massacre. The grotesque nature of these rallies was horrifying enough, but even more unsettling was the complete lack of action from Western authorities. Governments stood by as violent, hate-filled protests erupted on their streets. Demonstrators chanted anti-Israel, anti-Semitic, and genocidal slogans, some even calling for the destruction of entire nations, including Israel and the West.

These were not isolated events. In the months that followed, the protests only grew, turning into a weekly display of hate — and yet, little was done. Even as the demonstrations turned increasingly violent, with flags of enemy states burned and anti-Western sentiments voiced openly, authorities failed to act. Australia, for instance, saw no charges filed for hate speech in these protests, despite laws explicitly designed to address such behaviour. And the situation was no better in other Western nations. The silence from governments was deafening.

How did we get here? How have we come to a place where our streets are filled with hate, and our governments stand idly by, unable or unwilling to control the chaos? It does not take a genius to recognise that these demonstrations are being orchestrated by Islamists—adherents of an extreme form of Islam that is, at its core, at war with the West. The question then becomes: how did they get here, and why are we allowing them to thrive?

The Price of Tolerating the Intolerant

For years, Western countries have accepted migrants on the belief that they would contribute to the country’s economic and cultural life, living in harmony with existing citizens. The expectation has always been that migrants would assimilate into society, respecting the values of their new home. But as we’ve seen in recent years, some of these migrants—likely a small but vocal minority—have no intention of assimilating at all. Instead, they are working to transform the countries that welcomed them.

The truth is uncomfortable: some of these individuals seek to change the West. They are not just looking for a better life; they are actively trying to remake our societies into something more akin to the countries they left behind. They want a global caliphate. They want Sharia law. And, increasingly, they want to destroy the very values that the West was founded on: freedom, democracy, and secularism.

Why are we tolerating this? Why are we allowing the enemies of the West to freely enter and spread their destructive ideologies? Why has the West opened its doors to those who wish to undermine its very foundations?

The lack of effective vetting and the failure to ensure that those who enter the country are committed to respecting its values are glaring oversights by Western governments. They have allowed the sowing of dissent within their borders, to the detriment of their own citizens.

Australia’s Double Standard

In Australia, this problem is particularly evident. The Australian government has made two glaringly questionable decisions that put the nation at risk.

First, there is the decision to accept 3,000 refugees from Gaza — despite the fact that no other Arab country is willing to take them in. Why would Australia risk importing individuals from a region where many have deep ties to terrorist organisations? It’s a reckless gamble, one that the Australian public has not been given a clear explanation for. Why are we prioritising the relocation of people who may have links to Hamas when our own national security is at stake?

Second, Australia has recently repatriated a number of ISIS brides—women who voluntarily left Australia to join ISIS in its war against the West. These women married ISIS fighters, had children with them, and supported an organisation that was directly responsible for heinous acts of terror. After the defeat of ISIS, they sought to return to Australia, and astonishingly, the Australian government allowed them to come back. This is despite clear laws prohibiting the return of citizens who join foreign enemies.

The weak response from the Albanese government is deeply concerning. These women were part of an organisation bent on destroying the West, and yet the government has quietly allowed their return. The public has no transparency on the vetting process, and we don’t know how many have been brought back. Have they been charged? How thorough was the process? This failure to protect Australia from those who have supported our enemies undermines our national security.

The West Under Siege

It’s time to face the truth: radical Islam is a direct threat to Western societies. And the more we tolerate these ideologies within our borders, the more we risk losing the very freedoms that make the West what it is. These ideologies aren’t about peaceful coexistence; they are about revolution and subjugation. If we continue to turn a blind eye to the real threats within our societies, we are complicit in undermining the values that have long made our nations strong.

We cannot afford to remain silent in the face of this growing danger. It’s time for Western governments to take action — to ensure that they are actively vetting who enters their countries and not tolerating those who seek to destroy the societies they’ve chosen to inhabit.

Until we recognize the true threat posed by radical Islam and take decisive action, we will continue to watch our streets fill with hate and violence. The question is: how much longer will we let this go on before it’s too late?

Light in the tunnel..

The clarion call for Muslims to take back their religion from the Islamist came to a crescendo with Trumps' exhortation to the Muslim world; -

"DRIVE THEM OUT of your places of worship.
DRIVE THEM OUT of your communities.
DRIVE THEM OUT of your holy land, and
DRIVE THEM OUT OF THIS EARTH."

Over the years while there have been a number of demonstrations by the Muslim community against Isis and terrorism they have on the whole been ineffective. Hence we have the continuing wave of Islamic terror. 

Defeating  Islamism cannot occur without directly confronting its roots in fundamentalist Islamic teachings. This requires confronting the Salafist/Wahabist interpretations of the Koran and related texts.  Yet, a small light of hope appeared in a very long dark tunnel, when a 3 minute video by Zain, a commercial mobile radio operator in Kuwait went viral.  It shows a confrontation between a suicide bomber and his victims, a confrontation between fundamentalist and peaceful interpretations of Islam. While the video is in Arabic, there is an English subscript that tells the story.

This is a great move! Well done Zain. We need more.

How to stop radicalisation?

Over the past year the world has been confronted with outrageous acts of violence against innocents in the the name of Islam. Whether in Iraq and Syria by ISIL, or by Boko Haram in Africa or by so called 'lone wolf ' adherents in Paris or Toronto or Sydney.

With the capture of Ramadi highlighting recent setbacks in our war against ISIL, and the magentic influence of the 'death-cult' on misguided youth in the west, we are once again trying to understand the causes , the mindset , the process of radicalization and how to combat it.

There is no shortage of words on the subject. So you don't need too much from me. But I won't let that won't stop me , and who knows where another insight may lead.

The Jihadist strategy

What is it that motivates the instigators of these crimes? No, I don't mean the perpetrators, I think we should focus on the instigators. Those who provide the underlying 'philosophy', the rationale behind the attacks, and what they aim to achieve.
I am not sure if this strategy was actually contrived, or more likely gradually evolved, but its modus operandi can be broken into three elements;

• A well defined objective
• An underlying philosophy to provide the moral justification
• A process for action and draw adherents

The Objective 
The ultimate aim seems to be to regain the power enjoyed by Islam in the glorious past, the golden age of Islam during the Middle Ages when caliphates ruled much of the world.

The Underlying Philosophy
Islamic extremism, which for clarity I would like to call 'Jihadism', is based on the Wahhabist interpretation of the Koran. This 'radical' interpretation is used as a tool to provide cohesion to the adherents. It is far easier to control a large disparate group if you have an underlying philosophy and what better than a deep-seated belief system based on religion. Religion has often been used to control large groups very successfully.
It helps that this interpretation is fundamentalist in form. It hearkens back to the origins of Islam, when Mohammed himself spread the word by the sword. This literal interpretation is familiar to all Muslims. In the same way that modern day Christians do not follow a literal interpretation of the gospel, most modern day Muslims reject the literal interpretation of the Koran. However a significant minority even in the secular West will find it compelling.

The Process
The means by which the above elements combine to create the seemingly unstoppable growth of Jihadism is a complex process. I realise that the following components fo this process will require refinement given further input. Nevertheless I think it is worthwhile to note these as a starting point.

1. Spread the word - Teach the radical interpretation of Islam as far and wide as possible, from Madrassas and Mosques.
2. Recruit - Target and enlist, the weak-minded, uneducated, disfranchised, rebellious, envious, angry, frustrated youth, wherever they are in the world. Use social media to raise awareness of successes. Promote a culture requiring adherents to sacrifice to the common cause and recognise 'martyrs' as heroes of the Jihad,'struggle' .
3. Provide the means and weapons for violent acts against the identified enemies of Islam, America, Israel, Jews, infidel, crusaders, Kaffir.
4. Execute the plans - whether singly or in groups. Every event that occurs is amplified by the press, and used to show that the sacrifice of a 'martyr' has yielded success. Success in these terms is simply gaining the attention of the world. Power is the motive and it is gained as soon as an act occurs, irrespective of the target or irrespective of the success.
5. Exploit the reaction of the West to these attacks to enlist those who may have been on the fringes. This is made easier when extremist elements make unwarranted attacks on innocent Muslims. 
6. Escalate -
1. Phase 1.Start with sporadic terror attacks by random groups. This is happening in the west, Thailand, Philipiines, Russia 
2. Phase 2. When the numbers warrant, terror groups join up to create a rebel army which fights a guerrilla war to undermine the current governments. This is happening in Nigeria, soon Cameroon,Yemen, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.
3. In phase 3, as the strength of the fighting force is sufficient to take control of a region declare it a caliphate. This is what has happened in Iraq/Syria where we have the first such Jihadist so called state ISIL. 

This process has yielded an ever increasing army of Jihadistss carrying out their evil mission around the world.

The vicious cycle ; Reaction creates recruits

There is little doubt that this strategy has been working. It is hard to deny the unrelenting increase in Jihadism over the past 3 decades.

There are a number of potential reasons for this rise.

Increasing world affluence and ease of travel has opened up rapid migration both legal and illegal, across the globe. This has spread Islamic culture to many countries, where the struggle for survival and success leaves areas of poverty and discrimination. Such enclaves are fertile grounds for radicalization.

In many predominantly Muslim countries Jihadist insurgencies break down law and order, causing mass displacement, refugees, poverty. These are again ideal grounds for radicalization of unemployed, disenchanted youth.

While these and other demographic causes no doubt contribute to the rise, it is apparent that the reaction to counter acts of terror is also exploited to generate more recruits.

This vicious cycle seems to operate for any of the common reactions to a terror attack; Mass media attention, Increased police presence, and discrimination against Muslims.

Mass media attention, irrespective of how negative it may be towards them, empowers Jihadists, and provides a justification for 'fringe' Jihadists to take up the cause. Most often the perpetrator's name and photo, indeed his whole life become the focus of public discourse. He has gained notoriety. This is attractive to many, who for diverse reasons, feel estranged from their communities and question their significance in the world.

Increased police presence and counter terrorism actions provide further evidence of the 'power' of the Jihadist to influence state affairs. In the same way as mass media attention this is a positive effect for those fringe Jihadists who have identified with the sense of belonging offered by the recruiters.

Discriminating against all Muslims, though strongly discouraged by the vast majority of leaders, is an inevitable reaction to terrorism that is stated clearly to be in Islam's name. The reactions of Muslims to unfair discrimination is mostly benign , but borderline radicals can be tipped over the edge.

It seems that the most common and sensible reactions to acts of terror by Jihadists can be used by recruiters to create more Jihadists.

What we can do?

The response in Western states has varied from strong policing and law enforcement, including the enactment of terror laws, to attempts at analysis and in particular 'self -analysis'. What makes the terrorist and what is wrong with our society that a 'normal', 'average' teenager or fellow countryman would turn jihadist?
This is also reflected in the population with some suggesting 'I will ride with you' and others declaring a verbal war on all Muslims.

Law enforcement has been very successful. With an extensive intelligence network to track jihadists a great majority of terror plots have been discovered before they were executed. This however has not stopped the occasional terror plot succeeding, nor has it stopped the growth in recruitment to terror. Indeed the recent case of ISIL, where large numbers of jihadists have 'broken cover' and joined the fight in Syria and Iraq. For many, ISIL has become a turning point as it presents the re-birth of the caliphate, long promised and now 'achieved'.

Given our current efforts are failing, we do need to look afresh, and see if we can break the Jihadist cycle that threatens our Western civilization.

I don't pretend I have a solution, just some observations on what our society can do to fight this insidious evil.

• Always protect Western values; freedom of speech, rights of individuals, respect for the law, respect for each other. This includes vigorously enforcing the law especially when it relates to these values
• Always distinguish between Islam and violent Islam and ideally consistently call it 'Jihadism'. We respect freedom of religion as long as it does not promote Jihadism. 
• Call out the instigators, perpetrators and supporters of violence as Jihadists. This includes criticizing religious or other leaders who equivocate about terrorist violence. There is NO justification for violence against innocents NO matter the circumstances.
• Strengthen and enforce hate speech laws sufficiently to ensure recruitment to Jihad is effectively banned. Enforce the laws against hate speech, even if it occurs in a place of worship. (If required law enforcement should record all sermons by Imams and rabbis and Priests). 
• Strengthen and enforce immigration laws to prevent non-citizen advocates of Jihadism to enter or re-enter the country. Strip citizenship from dual-citizen Jihadists deport them or do not allow them to re-enter the country. If they have decided to join the other side during a conflict that is their choice, but by doing so they have given up the privilege to be citizens. Jihadists who have only Australian citizenship should be charged and face the consequences within Australia.
• Encourage moderate Muslims to speak out and give them a voice in the media. Break down animosity against Muslims with cross cultural events. Perhaps a 'Muslims against Jihad' rally or just 'Australians against Jihadism' march in which moderate Muslims can stand, united with the rest of our society against extremism.

Doing nothing is not an option

An open society always considers and considers and considers. Looking for reasons and self analyzing instead of acting. However the threat we face today will not wait. Jihadism is at our doorsteps and doing nothing is not an option. Moreover despite our best efforts to date, it is growing. So we need to manage our instinctive responses, clearly explain our revised policies and then enforce them rigorously. Clarity of purpose is often the weakness that sabotages what would otherwise be a successful policy.
